October is declared Social Development Month (SDM) and is celebrated annually to mark the nation’s commitment to caring for the most vulnerable in society. SDM seeks to raise awareness and take services of the Department of Social Development, including its entities, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and National Development Agency (NDA) to vulnerable communities. It is the most vulnerable in society particularly women, youth children and persons with disability and LGBTIQ community that are affected by Gender Based Violence spotlight on government’s commitment to promoting social protection by enabling access to social security programmes, combat poverty and hunger, and inform communities about available social support programs for access.
