"I’m an architect, so I build dreams."
When Ma Yansong joined us in Dalian for #IdeasOnTheMove, he shared a philosophy on design that goes far beyond function. For him, the built environment should inspire and connect us.
Growing up in Beijing, he discovered that nature could be emotional, dramatic – even spiritual. That belief shapes everything he builds: not just adding trees to a skyline, but creating genuine emotional connection to place.
He points to traditional Japanese dry gardens as the model – sand and stones that somehow evoke the ocean, the islands, the universe. That imaginative space, he says, is exactly what today’s cities are missing.
