IRIS²: Europe’s Satellite Constellation for Secure Communication

Source: European Commission (video statements)

More than 350 satellites. Secure EU communications from space. Europe’s IRIS² constellation launches from 2029.

IRIS² is the EU’s new secure satellite constellation, designed to ensure Europe stays connected on its own terms — in times of crisis and for defence, security, and emergency services. As part of the European Space Shield, it brings EU capabilities together to defend against jamming and spoofing and to fill critical gaps, such as space-based early warning.

IRIS² follows Europe’s proven model: Copernicus and Galileo were built through cooperation and have become global public goods.
