In her State of the European Union 2025 speech, President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the importance of European Union Migration Control.
Europe must build a migration system that is both humane and realistic. She highlighted the need for a rapid agreement on the Common European Return System, a new sanctions regime against smugglers and traffickers, and the swift implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum.
Her message is clear: protecting those fleeing war and persecution must go hand in hand with securing Europe’s borders, and success will depend on all Member States playing their part.

Lords members begin discussions on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on Friday 12 September. This is the first of two days of second reading, the first phase of a bill’s passage through the Lords. Almost 200 members are expected to speak over two days, bringing a range of professional and lived experience, including nurses, doctors and lawyers.
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is a private members’ bill, which  is a type of public bill introduced by an individual member of the Lords (rather than the government).
If passed, it would allow adults in England and Wales with a prognosis of less than six months to live to be provided with assistance to end their lives, subject to eligibility criteria and conditions.
