What is the right to development, and why does it still matter?
Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 4 December 1986, at the end of the colonial era, the Declaration on the Right to Development recognizes that every person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development in which all human rights can be fully realized.
Yet armed conflict, shrinking civic space, climate change, artificial intelligence and the erosion of multilateral cooperation stand in the way, and there is still no binding international instrument on the right to development.
Ahead of the high-level meeting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Declaration at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Juana María Ibáñez Rivas, Chair of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, explains what this right means and why it matters today.

That’s what we asked some of the planet’s leading chief #economists. Just over half said they expect the global economy to stabilize in the coming year, while 45% expect it to weaken – down from 89% who expected this in May’s survey.
However, the path ahead remains uncertain, due to headwinds including asset-price corrections and global conflict.
