For the last 6 weeks, the conflict in the Middle East is bringing heavy consequences on our economy and the world. Any agreement will have to address Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programme and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The restoration of the freedom of navigation is of paramount importance for us. For more information, view the live replay here:

Since 44 days, the fossil fuel bill has increased by 22 billion euro for Europeans. To face these high costs, Europe wants to move away from fossil fuels, and use more renewable energy made in Europe. A series of measures will be discussed next week at the informal council in Cyprus, and a communication will be issued beforehand.

"The only lasting way out of the fossil dependency is shifting electricity generation to renewables and nuclear." – President Ursula von der Leyen
On 13 April 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave a press statement on the impact of the situation in the Middle East on Europe.
In her statement, President von der Leyen warned that the Middle East crisis has cost the EU €22 billion extra in fossil fuel imports in just 44 days, with no added supply. She called for urgent EU coordination on energy reserves, targeted aid for households, and temporary State aid rules by April. Long-term, she pushed for faster expansion of renewables and nuclear (now 70% of EU electricity) and electrification, backed by public funds and private investment. Concrete proposals will be finalised ahead of the informal European Council meeting in Cyprus next week.
The core message was clear: Europe must transition faster to homegrown, affordable energy to escape the volatility of fossil fuels.

The Entry/Exit System — the most modern IT border system in the world — is now fully deployed.
The EES is changing what border management actually looks like.
Passport stamps are becoming a thing of the past — replaced by a digital system that keeps accurate records of who enters and exits the EU. For travellers, that means shorter queues, self-service kiosks, and the option to share your details before you even arrive.
For border officers, it means better tools — biometric data that flags overstayers, catches fake identities, and helps law enforcement connect the dots on serious crime and terrorism.
Safe borders. Smoother travel. That’s what modern travel looks like.
