Today, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive strategy to step up support for the EU eastern regions bordering Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, facing multiple challenges in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Strengthening the prosperity and resilience of these regions is not only an expression of EU solidarity but also a strategic investment in Europe’s security, competitiveness, and future stability.

Several regions from nine Member States – Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria – have been affected by hybrid warfare, weaponised migration, economic and trade disruption, and demographic decline.

Since the outset of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the EU has extended political, technical, and financial support to its eastern regions to improve infrastructure, boost economic resilience, develop defence capabilities, address challenges in energy and connectivity, and support employment opportunities. Additionally, the EU–Ukraine Solidarity Lanes have sustained trade.

The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into Shein under the Digital Services Act, targeting potential breaches of EU consumer safety regulations. The probe focuses on Shein’s addictive design and rewards programmes, the lack of transparency in its recommender systems, and the sale of illegal products, including weapons and child-like sex dolls. This investigation seeks to ensure digital platforms prioritise user well-being and adhere to the highest transparency standards within the European market.

"Today is the time for action" – President von der Leyen

On 14 February 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a keynote speech at the annual Munich Security Conference.

In her speech, President von der Leyen addresses the importance of strengthening Europe’s independence amid ongoing security challenges, including Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Emphasising the necessity for Europe to take primary responsibility for its security, she outlines the EU’s plan to invest significantly in defence capabilities and embrace more strategic partnerships.

President von der Leyen also calls for a new European Security Strategy, urging a proactive approach to protect European territories and values. Her speech concludes with an affirmation that Europe must honour its commitments and ensure peace and freedom through heightened independence and unity.
