EU targets Russia’s energy and banking sectors

Source: European Commission (video statements)

With the 18th sanctions package against Russia, announced on June 10th, the EU goes for the Russia’s energy and banking sectors.

Europe is putting Nord Stream 1 and 2 behind for good. We are also listing additional 77 vessels that are part of the Russian shadow fleet. Oil is one third of Russia’s government revenues. We need to cut this source. That’s why we propose to lower the oil price cap from 60 to 45 $ per barrel.

🔹 Banking – We are targeting the Russian banking sector by limiting its ability to raise funding and conduct transactions. We propose to transform the existing prohibition to use the SWIFT system into a full transaction ban. And we propose to apply such a transaction ban to another 22 Russian banks.
Our message is very clear: this war must end. We need a real ceasefire, and Russia has to come to the negotiating table with a serious proposal.

In this video, we follow the journey of Connell, a retired man from Ireland, and Csenge, a young nurse from Hungary, who were invited to participate in a European Citizens’ Panel. Initially sceptical, Connell was surprised to find himself on a plane to Brussels the next day. Along with citizens from different European countries, he participated in small group sessions where they discussed energy efficiency. The group focused on the issue of railway travel and proposed ideas to make it more environmentally friendly. Their suggestions were well received by the European Commission, giving Connell a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Csenge, on top of her contributions to the Energy Efficiency policy-making process, also formed friendships with people from different countries, highlighting the diversity and power of collaboration.
This experience showed both of them the importance of citizen involvement in shaping the future of Europe and how even an individual can make a difference.

What Is the European Ocean Pact? And why is it necessary?

Source: European Commission (video statements)

The ocean powers life on Earth. It covers 70% of the planet, produces half our oxygen, and holds 80% of global biodiversity. But it’s at a tipping point.

To protect this vital resource while unlocking its full potential, the EU launched the European Ocean Pact, a unified strategy to shape the future of ocean governance.

From fisheries to offshore wind. From biodiversity to marine research. From local communities to global cooperation. One Ocean, One strategy. #EUOceanPact

“Europe is investing EUR 1 billion in 50 projects around the world”

Source: European Commission (video statements)

On 9 June, 2025, at the UN Ocean Conference, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presents the European Ocean Pact:

"We want to build a strong global alliance for the Ocean, because the fight to promote and protect our Ocean is a global challenge. As the declaration from this Conference makes clear, there is a funding shortfall to support ocean conservation, science and sustainable fishing. So I am delighted to announce today that:

Europe is investing EUR 1 billion in 50 projects around the world. We will invest in those who make a living from the sea, and we will invest in scientists and conservationists who seek to protect it. We will help to promote sustainable fishing in Tanzania, regenerate mangrove forests and their natural supply chains in Guyana and protect the coral and seagrass which sustain 20% of global fish stocks. Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools for ocean conservation, so one-third of the EUR 1 billion in funding announced today is targeted for research and scientific projects."
