Following the developments of the situation in Iran, the EU has expressed its full support to the people of Iran, and their fundamental right to protest peacefully. The EU deeply regrets the loss of life resulting from recent events in Iran. The EU urges the full respect of international law, protection of civilians and fundamental freedoms, and emphasises that only a diplomatic and negotiated solution can bring lasting peace and stability.

On 2 March 2026, Commission President von der Leyen made a statement on the situation in the Middle-East:
"The situation in the Middle East remains volatile.
But three things are clear:
First, there is renewed hope for the long-suffering people of Iran.
We strongly support their right to determine their own future.
Second, we must do everything possible to de-escalate and stop the conflict spreading.
Iran must cease its reckless and indiscriminate attacks on its neighbours and sovereign countries.
Third, the stability of the region is of the utmost importance.
The only lasting resolution is a diplomatic one.
This means a credible transition for Iran which includes the halt to both the nuclear and ballistic programmes, as well as an end to destabilising action in the region.
This afternoon, we will discuss the overall situation in the meeting of the Security College.
Because from energy to nuclear, migration to security, Europe must be prepared for the fall-out from recent events"

Follow Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s press statement on the EU-Mercosur Agreement live from the Brussels headquarters!
In her statement, President von der Leyen announced the ratification of the EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement in Uruguay and Argentina. Being the first states to ratify it, these countries showcase the eagerness to advance relations and create a vast market with substantial opportunities, reduced tariffs, and benefits for European businesses. The European Commission will proceed with the provisional application of the agreement while awaiting full consent from the European Parliament.
