EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova are now formally underway. In practical terms, this means the EU membership process has moved from broad political support to structured negotiations focused on concrete reforms.
The first stage of talks centres on the EU’s “fundamentals” cluster. This covers key areas such as the rule of law, judicial reform, anti-corruption measures, democratic institutions, public administration and human rights.
Progress here is especially important because it shapes the pace of the wider accession process. For Moldova, the move strengthens its pro-EU course and gives weight to its reform agenda despite domestic and regional pressures. For Ukraine, it is an especially symbolic step, showing that the EU is keeping enlargement on track even during Russia’s war.

The European Union and the Republic of Korea held their 11th Summit in Brussels.
The Summit marked a new phase in the EU-Republic of Korea strategic partnership, pushing concrete outcomes to enhance economic resilience, security and defence cooperation, research, and the clean energy transition.
The European Commission has adopted two new strategies dedicated to supporting EU islands and coastal communities.
The strategy for islands focuses on improving connectivity, expanding the "Clean Energy for EU Islands" initiative through 2030, enhancing housing affordability, and strengthening crisis preparedness. Simultaneously, the strategy for coastal communities prioritizes a competitive "blue economy," fostering innovations such as algae-based fertilizers and blue carbon certification, while ensuring resilience and livability. Together, these measures empower locally led solutions to help these regions thrive as sustainable, competitive, and vibrant parts of the European Union.
