“No more excuses”: A new age verification app to keep kids safe online

Source: European Commission (video statements)

The safety of children – both online and offline – is a core priority for the European Commission. In their press statements from 15 April 2026, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen presented the new Digital Age Verification App. It allows users to anonymously prove their age without sharing personal data when accessing platforms. This way, it blocks harmful or illegal content for minors while respecting strict privacy standards.

"Our technical solution is ready," remarked President von der Leyen. Motivated by rising risks like cyberbullying, addictive social media, and online grooming, the EU-developed tool builds on the success of its COVID certificate app. It offers a user-friendly, open-source, and cross-device solution that Member States (e.g., France, Italy) are already adopting. Coupled with tougher enforcement
against non-compliant platforms, the app ensures children’s safety is prioritised over commercial interests. It thus provides parents and carers a vital shield in the digital world.

44 days of conflict

Source: European Commission (video statements)

For the last 6 weeks, the conflict in the Middle East is bringing heavy consequences on our economy and the world. Any agreement will have to address Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programme and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The restoration of the freedom of navigation is of paramount importance for us. For more information, view the live replay here:

€22 billion in 44 Days: How the Middle East Crisis Impacts Europe

Source: European Commission (video statements)

"The only lasting way out of the fossil dependency is shifting electricity generation to renewables and nuclear." – President Ursula von der Leyen

On 13 April 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave a press statement on the impact of the situation in the Middle East on Europe.

In her statement, President von der Leyen warned that the Middle East crisis has cost the EU €22 billion extra in fossil fuel imports in just 44 days, with no added supply. She called for urgent EU coordination on energy reserves, targeted aid for households, and temporary State aid rules by April. Long-term, she pushed for faster expansion of renewables and nuclear (now 70% of EU electricity) and electrification, backed by public funds and private investment. Concrete proposals will be finalised ahead of the informal European Council meeting in Cyprus next week.

The core message was clear: Europe must transition faster to homegrown, affordable energy to escape the volatility of fossil fuels.
