Negotiations for a free trade agreement have reached the final stage and that, if concluded, would create a market of 2 billion people, cutting €4 billion in annual tariffs for exporters of all sizes, and securing supplies of crucial materials and products.

Similarly, European leaders are expected to conclude a Security and Defence Partnership to expand cooperation in the defence industry, maritime security, secure connectivity and space.

The European Commission has launched a new formal investigation against X. The new investigation will assess if the company properly assessed and mitigated risks associated with the deployment of Grok’s functionalities in the EU. This comes after the dissemination of illegal content created by Grok, such as deep fake sexually explicit images, content that may amount to child sexual abuse material and anti-Semitic content.

The European Commission is today deploying 450 emergency generators worth €3.7 million from EU strategic reserves to restore power to hospitals, shelters and critical services in Ukraine. Over one million Ukrainians are without electricity, water and heating in freezing temperatures following relentless Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. The EU will not let Russia freeze Ukraine and will continue helping Ukrainians get through this winter.

On 23 January 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about transatlantic relations with a focus on European security, specifically concerning Greenland and Ukraine.

She emphasized Europe’s strengthened position in Greenland through solidarity and strategic engagement with the US alongside the need for increased investment in Arctic security.

Regarding Ukraine, President von der Leyen detailed Europe’s intensified support amid Russian aggression and outlined progress on a Prosperity Framework for Ukraine’s post-war future through economic reforms, EU integration, and donor coordination. She concluded by underscoring the commitment to Ukraine’s independence, with further discussions at a Leaders Retreat on February 12th.
