00:14 – How air bubbles filter forever chemicals: PFAS, or ‘forever chemicals’ are found in masses of products, from non-stick pans to clothing. US company Allonnia provides a solution to remove PFAS from water using a simple resource: air. PFAS destruction technologies have been selected as one of the World Economic Forum’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2026.

Dr Quarraisha Abdool Karim is one of the world’s leading HIV scientists. She joined us in Dalian with a clear-eyed view of where the fight stands today.

The science has delivered: a promising new twice-yearly injectable that could be a genuine game-changer for young women. But the risk of HIV slipping off the global agenda remains, as funding shifts and multilateralism faces new pressure.

Her message is direct: ending AIDS as a public health threat now requires a whole-of-society approach – government, civil society and industry working together, to get these lifesaving tools to the people who need them.

UN Budget & Finances – Press Conference | United Nations

UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan told reporters that on Tuesday (30 Jun), the Member States approved a budget of $5.1 billion for peacekeeping, “which is about $550 million less than last year, which is a 9.7 percent reduction.”

“About 1,100 civilian posts also being reduced,” he added.

Asked about the two biggest financial contributors of the UN, Ramanathan said that on the regular budget, “China owes us another US dollars 428 million, which we expect them to pay maybe in September and December into installments.”

“The US also was assessed US dollars 767 million. They paid 160. We’ve been told that they were planning to make a payment in April and July. The April payment didn’t happen, so they are still telling us that the payment is on its way and we are expecting a payment.”

The Controller also said, “our assumptions are based on collections from both of them, if either of them doesn’t pay in time, we have a little bit of a crisis in September, but if they don’t pay at all or pay a less than their original amount, then we have a little bit of a challenge at the end of the year. But even if both of them pay, we’re going to end the year with pretty much our cash gone.”

Ramanathan also emphasized that the new methodology “prevents a crash” but “it does not do away with all the problems.”

He said, “the expectation should not be that suddenly we are in a great shape and we’re going. No, we have prevented a crash. We ensure that the boat can get to the coast. It does not mean that it’s strong enough now to keep sailing because it still has problems. It is still vulnerable to any nonpayment.”

The UN ended 2025 with a record high of $1.6 billion in unpaid assessments, according to the Secretary-General latest report on the Organization’s financial status, issued in May.

Overall arrears across the regular budget, peacekeeping and two international tribunals exceed $6.5 billion.

At the beginning of this year, the UN implemented strict cash conservation measures to both reduce and slow expenditures.

Until Tuesday night (30 Jun), the financial rules, established 80 years ago, required the UN to give back any unspent funds to Member States as credits against future assessments.

This applied even when underspending results from late contributions or from funds that were never received.

The European Council is the highest political body of the European Union. It brings together the heads of state or government of all member states, as well as its President and the President of the European Commission. It shapes the EU’s political agenda, addresses major challenges and sets strategic priorities, such as those outlined in the Strategic Agenda 2024–2029. This seeks to build a Europe that is free and democratic, strong and secure, prosperous and competitive. The European Council also plays a key role in crisis management, from responding to Russia’s war in Ukraine to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. Decisions are typically made by consensus. Its meetings, often called ‘European summits’, take place at least four times a year in Brussels.

The Council of the European Union (often referred to as the ‘Council’) is where the EU’s day-to-day legislative and policy work takes place. Bringing together ministers from each EU member state, it negotiates and adopts laws, usually in partnership with the European Parliament, across 10 policy areas, from foreign affairs to energy. Unlike the European Council, the Council of the European Union operates under a rotating six-month presidency. Each member state holds the presidency in turn. Meetings are held regularly in Brussels and Luxembourg, ensuring that every EU country, regardless of size, has an equal voice in shaping European policies.

Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU: European Commissioners in Ireland

On 1st July 2026, Ireland took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU which will last 6 months. To commemorate the beginning of the Presidency, the Commissioners as well as President von der Leyen are travelling to Cork. During the day, a press conference with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will take place.

US-Iran Ceasefire Strains as Attacks Hit Bahrain and Kuwait – Briefing | United Nations

Addressing a Security Council emergency session as a fragile US-Iran ceasefire came under renewed strain following fresh military exchanges, Assistant Secretary-General Elizabeth Spehar said, “residential areas, ports, energy facilities, commercial vessels and maritime personnel must be protected” and “merchant shipping should not be used as a tool of pressure.”

The military exchanges have reportedly included in recent days attacks by Iran on Bahrain and Kuwait.
