These pictures of Earth were just taken by astronauts who broke a new record

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

On Monday, the NASA-led mission Artemis II reached 406,788km from Earth – the furthest that humans have ever been in space.

The mission took astronauts around the dark side of the Moon, and broke a 56-year-old record held by Apollo 13.

The crew hugged as they made history, and beamed back special announcements honouring their predecessors and urging unity for ‘Mother Earth’, saying: ‘We will always choose each other.’

#Space exploration provides a unique perspective on our planet, and an opportunity to gather Earth observation data and insights, which are powerful tools for addressing many challenges facing the planet, from climate change to sustainable growth.

What Astronauts Know About High-Performing Teams (That Many Don’t Understand)

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

High performers don’t always make the best teammates. It’s a fact astronauts know well but one that Earthbound workplaces can sometimes overlook. European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti shares what space crews understand about building teams that work well together – and the shift that preparation undertook to make that happen. She shares what mentors taught her about being a great team member and why the ‘experience’ of the work day is as important as the task at hand. She also details other lessons learned from her more than 200 days in space, including:

-Why the best leaders are great followers
-How space sovereignty will shape the next phase of space collaboration. “You want to be an equal partner—not just a customer.”
-Why the gender gap in space is closing. Learn why some astronaut classes are at parity and what it teaches other sectors about talent pipelines

This interview was recorded in January 2026 at the Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Iran Conflict Hits the Economy & China’s Green Hydrogen Project | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

This week’s top stories of the week include:

0:13 – Journaling gave this author a lifeline: To writer and speaker Suleika Jaouad, journalling is more than a hobby: it’s a lifeline. Through three bouts of cancer, her journals have allowed her to make sense of her experience, to stay creative, and to keep in contact with the people she loves. She was a guest on the World Economic Forum’s #MeetTheLeader podcast.

04:31 – World’s Largest Green Hydrogen Project: This factory in China uses energy from nearby wind and solar plants to generate clean #hydrogen, a key fuel for the energy transition. It could cut carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually – and already powers AI data centres using 100% renewable energy. Here, Envision CEO and Founder Lei Zhang describes this incredible hub of #energy innovation in the Inner Mongolian desert.

07:36 – Quantum Tech fighting climate change: Cutting methane emissions is one of the most effective ways to curb global warming – but most methane leaks go unnoticed. Traditional sensors can tell you there’s a leak nearby, but that’s about it. QLM’s quantum lidar cameras represent a vast step-up in capability. They can detect and measure methane emissions with pinpoint accuracy and at distances of up to 200 metres, giving industries a vital tool for tackling leaks.

08:59 – How the Iran Conflict hits the Economy: One month into the #Iran war, amid the humanitarian tragedy, clues are emerging about the wider economic fallout. As the world faces one of the most severe #energy and commodity shocks in recent history, the World Economic Forum convened a panel of leading chief economists, comprising Saad Rahim (Trafigura), Razia Khan (Standard Charter), Máximo Torero (FAO) and Ludovic Subran (Allianz), to discuss the far-reaching implications of the escalating Middle East war for the global #economy.

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

In an AI era, the real competitive advantage won’t come from generating more ideas, but picking the right idea to take forward. Leaders who foster cultures of creativity and curiosity will build teams better able to sharpen focus, challenge assumptions, and execute in the most effective and compelling ways.

The long-time science writer, puzzle maker, brainstorming expert and former head of the Encyclopaedia Britannica shares lessons from his eclectic background on how leaders can harness a team’s natural curiosity to drive fresh thinking and innovation.
You’ll learn:

Why clarity matters in innovation – and why the audience is usually right
How to model the creative behaviors you want to see in your team
Which qualities creative, curious teams always have in common

He went on to co-found Water.org with sector expert Gary White. Here, the pair discuss their WaterCredit initiative, which extends affordable micro-loans to help people build, access and pay for their own water supplies and toilets.

04:57 – Yoshua Bengio has a solution to make AI honest and safe: As AI is rolled out rapidly by corporations and countries in heavy competition, is the world taking full account of the risks? Yoshua Bengio says not. Bengio is a world-renowned expert on deep learning and one of the people hailed as the ‘godfather of AI’. Here, Bengio explains why caution should be the watchword with AI.
