How to Make Economic Growth Sustainable & Mexico Solar Cooks | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

This week’s top stories of the week include:

0:14 – Can growth be good for the planet? – Sustainability and economic growth need not be opponents, argues economist Alessio Terzi, Assistant Professor at the Bennett School of Public Policy, University of Cambridge. Here Terzi explains why – and how to get there.

4:05 – These Indigenous women in Mexico are cooking with sunlight – These Indigenous women from Oaxaca state have swapped their traditional wood or gas-fired ovens with clean, sunshine-powered solar stoves – with enormous benefits.

6:33 – Doctors want to use AI, but their patients are less sure – 79% of healthcare professionals are optimistic that AI can improve patient outcomes. Fewer patients are optimistic about AI in healthcare overall. Carla Goulart Peron, Chief Medical Officer at Philips, says the main reason for the gap in optimism between staff and their patients is a lack of trust in #AI. It can be closed, though – as she explains.

9:19 – Why businesses should care about refugees, according to this expert – In an era of shrinking aid budgets and rising displacement, businesses have a part to play in helping refugees, says Raouf Mazou, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations at UNHCR.

IRC’s David Miliband: How leaders can meet the moment in an increasingly disordered world

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

Recent years have brought a host of challenges, from widening economic gaps and climate chaos, to geopolitical instability. David Miliband is the president and chief executive officer of the International Rescue Committee, a global humanitarian organization founded by Albert Einstein in the 1930s to give aid to people whose lives are upended by war, conflict and disaster. He talked to Meet the Leader about a trend he’s tracked for years – the age of impunity – one where leaders seem less accountable to the power they yield. He shares how this has taken shape in conflict zones, democracies and economies, and its surprising impacts to people on the ground. He also shares the challenge he sees for leaders of all stripes in the near future, giving practical advice on how leaders can stay accountable to the big picture, craft strategies and cultures that complement their missions, and better meet the moment in an increasingly disordered world.

This interview was recorded October 2025 in the World Economic Forum New York Office.
