Brazil is Becoming a Nature Superpower & Is Tourism a Right? | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

0:14 – Brazil is on the way to becoming a ‘nature superpower’, says this expert: Brazil hosts 15-20% of the world’s animal and plant species. Its vast territory spans six biomes, from tropical rainforest to savanna – and it holds 10% of the world’s freshwater. From these foundations, Brazil can emerge as the world’s first nature superpower. Learn how.

3:23 – These robot dogs are helping to manage forests in the UK: These robots are being used to build detailed maps of forests, with the aim of improving management and conservation. They have been developed as part of the #DigiForest project, which involves University of Oxford and partners across Europe.

5:00 – Countries have different starting points for the green transition: Countries vary in their wealth, the age and size of their workforces, and their access to energy, technology, investment and innovation. It makes sense, then, that they’ll all need to take different paths towards an equitable transition, especially in the midst of global economic turbulence. The World Economic Forum’s Equitable Transition Initiative has identified six core categories of countries, based on what they have in common

8:16 – Is travel and tourism a right or a privilege?: Tourism is a right, says Marina Novelli, Chair of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics at World Tourism Organization, but we need to treat it as a privilege, and that means finding a sustainable balance between the demands of tourists and those of their destinations.

What my record 102-hour saltwater swim taught me about the ocean

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

"During those 102 hours, I connected with my soul, my brain, my body, to a level that I will probably never do again. And I discovered a part of myself that I couldn’t think was capable of doing what I did."
Noam Yaron swam from Corsica to just off the coast of Monaco, mainland Europe, to push himself to the limit and raise awareness about the marine environment.

Here’s what he learned about human endurance and the threats to nature posed by pollution, shipping and rising temperatures.

Financing the Green Transition & Extreme Weather in Southeast Asia | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

0:14 – 3 ways to get back to 1.5°C – A climate scientist’s message to COP30: In the next 5-10 years, it’s ‘inevitable’ the planet will breach 1.5°C of global warming on a more permanent basis, after it touched the boundary for the first time in 2024, says Johan Rockström, Joint Director of PIK Potsdam.

3:38 – Protecting the most at-risk tropical forests would save 25 million jobs: Every year, the planet loses an area of tropical forest equivalent to the size of South Korea. And overall, almost one-quarter of all tropical forests are at high risk of being lost, according to a new report by the UNEP.

5:29 – Extreme weather harms 9 in 10 migrants in Southeast Asia: Lost wages, absenteeism, poor health: the impacts of extreme weather on workers in Southeast Asia are both severe and rising. A survey of workers by People’s Courage International found that extreme heat is the biggest challenge they face. But there are effective, low-cost ways to lessen the impacts of heat stress on workers. Here are 4 of them.

7:07 – Saving the planet requires money. This expert explores how to finance the green transition: ‘We need to think about what we place value on,’ says Marisa Drew, Chief Sustainability Officer of Standard Chartered. A host of financial instruments are springing up to smooth the capital flows required for the sustainable transformation of the global economy. Here, she talks us through some of the main ones.
