How AI is rescuing critical minerals from the scrap heap

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

Batteries pose a growing problem at e-waste facilities, sparking fires in refuse trucks or processing lines. And due to the rise of low-cost ‘fast tech’ such as earbuds and vapes, there are more batteries lurking in e-waste than ever before.

This #AI system is helping to solve the problem with a quickfire sorting mechanism. It scans conveyor belts for likely #batteries and shoots them off the line for processing with a precise jet of compressed air.

Clean Energy Overtakes Coal & How Japan is Tackling Smartphone Addiction

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

00:14:20 – Smartphone addiction is on the rise around the world. It brings with it a range of health risks, from depression and anxiety to sleeplessness. In Japan, the average high school student spends 6 hours a day online – more than any other age group. Now the country is taking steps to tackle smartphone addiction. Here’s how.

02:20:19 – The planet has achieved a historic first as, in the first half of 2025, renewables produced more electricity than coal. Global electricity demand actually grew in that time – but a surge in new solar and wind capacity more than covered the increase.

04:24:13 – Only 15% of cybercrimes are ever reported, according to the FBI — leaving law enforcement blind to evolving threats. Reporting also helps protect future victims, says Interpol Cybercrime Director Neil Jetton.

09:16:21 – Large language models are trained on huge volumes of text, much of it lifted from the searchable internet. But there is a lack of reciprocity here, argues the CEO of Creative Commons, Anna Tumadóttir. She says that tech companies are taking what they need and monetizing the results – and this imbalance is disincentivizing writers and creators from sharing their work openly.

Why our future must be ‘nature positive’

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

We all rely on nature to survive – but humans continue to destroy and degrade the environment to an extent that puts our own species at risk
Nature conservationist Marco Lambertini puts the case for going ‘nature positive’ – getting companies and countries to account for their impact on nature and find ways to conserve and restore more than they destroy.

The NGO Protecting Migrant Workers & How to Overcome Money Worries | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

Source: World Economic Forum (video statements)

0:14 – Accident inspires man to aid migrants: When Ashif Shaikh was 17, three migrant workers were killed in an explosion at a firecracker factory near his home in India. Having grown up in an excluded community in India, Shaikh had faced his own experiences with insecurity, discrimination and a lack of protection for workers. While still a teen, he founded the non-profit Jan Sahas, and he is now CEO of People’s Courage International, which works to support internal migrants, strengthen grassroots organizations, and prevent sexual violence against women and children.

03:30 – Dairy protein grown without cows: Lactoferrin supports immunity, boosts gut health and improves digestion – but right now, 90% of the global supply goes into expensive baby formula, primarily in one market. Producing lactoferrin requires vast quantities of milk – a problem where Fengru Lin, CEO of Turtle Tree, has spotted an opportunity. TurtleTree uses precision fermentation to create pure lactoferrin in a cow-free process – by getting microbes to do the growing instead.

06:06 – Afrobeat song teaches cybersecurity: Cybersecurity is crucial, but experts often miss out on one key aspect: making it fun. That’s why the Cybersafe Foundation has tapped into Africa’s vibrant musical heritage to bring you something you thought you’d never hear – an Afrobeat track that riffs on two-factor authentication. Here, CyberSafe’s founder Confidence Staveley explains how the song came about.

08:12 – Does money talk make you anxious?: Having open conversations about money can be the first step on the journey to long-term financial stability, says Lin Shi, an academic, actuary and World Economic Forum Global Shaper. That’s why she founded the Money Health Collective – a free-to-access online space that facilitates open conversations about money in a supportive community, with the aim of helping users build a brighter financial future.
