Source: European Commission (video statements)

President Ursula von der Leyen delivers the 2026 State of the Union (SOTEU) address before the European Parliament, setting out the European Commission’s priorities for the year ahead and her vision for a stronger, more independent Europe.

In her 2026 State of the Union speech, President von der Leyen focuses on the key challenges and priorities facing the European Union: strengthening European security and defence, boosting competitiveness, continuing support for Ukraine, accelerating the clean and digital transition, and defending democracy, social rights and European unity in a changing and increasingly unstable world.

The State of the European Union is the European Commission’s annual moment to take stock of achievements, address today’s biggest challenges, and present the roadmap for the future of the EU across all 27 Member States.

Geoeconomics and the International Trading System

16 and 17 September 2026. Frankfurt am Main

The rules-based multilateral international trading system is under strain. Great-power competition, security concerns, and the deliberate use of geoeconomic dependencies for strategic ends point towards a fundamental shift in the relationship between economics and geopolitics. This year’s Annual Research Conference wants to contribute to a better understanding of the underlying dynamics by showcasing the latest academic research and by providing a forum for researchers and policymakers to exchange ideas and discuss Europe’s options in this new global environment.

The conference will be live-streamed, and the live stream will be available on this page shortly before the event.

Yemen: Fighting has Intensified as Houthis advance in the Red Sea – Briefing | United Nations

Source: United Nations (video statements)

“Fighting has intensified along Yemen’s west coast, as the Houthis continued their advance towards the Bab al Mandab Strait, reportedly capturing several islands in the southern Red Sea,” Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari told the Security Council.

Briefing the Council members today (15 Sep) in New York, Khiari said the Government of Yemen had reportedly launched a counteroffensive after the Houthi advances of the past week, with clashes across several frontlines, including in Marib, Al-Jawf and Taiz. He noted that unconfirmed estimates indicated hundreds of combatant casualties in recent days.

The Assistant Secretary-General reported that approximately 2,300 people fleeing the fighting had arrived in the Obock region of northern Djibouti as of 14 September. UN teams are working with the Djiboutian government to respond, and further arrivals are expected.

Khiari noted that on 14 September, the Houthis claimed to have targeted the King Khaled Airbase in Khamis Mushait, in southern Saudi Arabia, with ballistic missiles and drones.

He warned, “The longer the Strait remains choked, the higher the cost globally. Further escalation risks grave consequences for international peace and security, global energy markets, food security and economies of countries that are beyond region, particularly the most vulnerable.”
