El Niño’s Return & Economists on the Strait of Hormuz Crisis | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

This week’s top stories of the week include:

00:14 – Industrial waste used for wind turbine bases: Concrete is the planet’s most widely used resource after water – responsible for up to 8% of #CO2 emissions. To make cement, a key component of concrete responsible for the majority of its emissions, producers have to burn virgin limestone in kilns at high temperatures using fossil fuels. But Cemvision is pioneering a new cement called Re-Ment, which uses waste products from industry, fired at much lower temperatures in kilns powered by renewables.
Swedish energy giant Vattenfall has signed a deal with Cemvision to use the low-impact #cement in its renewable energy infrastructure.

01:31 – Economists on the Strait of Hormuz Crisis: When conflict closed the Strait of #Hormuz in late February, the planet lost a waterway that carries around 20% of its oil and gas trade. But what is the economic fallout likely to be? This is one of the key talking points in the latest Chief Economists’ Outlook, a World Economic Forum report that polls the expectations of some of the planet’s leading chief #economists. Here, Forum Insight Lead Philipp Grosskurth talks through its findings, from #growth forecasts to the impact of AI to the best environments to do business in 2026.

04:25 – El Niño is returning: what to expect: Scientists have spotted signs of an unusually powerful El Niño, which could form as early as this month. El Niño is a natural #climate pattern that occurs every 2-7 years. It can trigger flooding in South America and the US, and #drought and wildfires in southern Asia and Australia.
