00:16 – Ghana’s first marine sanctuary: Almost 200 countries across the world have pledged to protect 30% of their ocean by 2030. But right now, there’s a lot of work to do, with just 10% of the global ocean protected. #Ghana just took a big step forward with the establishment of the Greater Cape Three Points marine protected area.
01.56 – AI satellites re-shaping Earth observation: Orbitworks plans to launch a 10-satellite constellation later this year. Rather than capturing images in orbit and transmitting them back to Earth for analysis, which creates a time lag, the satellites will use #AI to process data directly in space. CEO Hamdullah Mohib is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. Here, he explains how the technology works.
04.24 – Japan’s new word for extreme heat: In 2007, Japanese weather forecasters began to use a new word – ‘moshobi’, meaning extremely hot day – to describe when the mercury climbed past 35˚C.
05.53 – Empowering indigenous forest protection: Indigenous cultures have a lot to teach the world, says Indonesian rainforest activist Bustar Maitar. And the first thing is to respect nature by taking from it only what you need. Maitar enjoyed a successful career with Greenpeace, winning ‘zero deforestation’ pledges from major multinationals. But he was drawn back to Papua to fight for forests there – and also, through his EcoNusa Foundation, to defend the rights, culture and livelihoods of #Indigenous communities, from which will emerge the next generation of #forest stewards.
