Why do only a handful of countries have nuclear weapons? A series of barriers — from international treaties and IAEA safeguards to the enormous technical and financial challenges involved — are designed to stop nuclear weapons from spreading. But with around 12,000 nuclear weapons still estimated worldwide and growing geopolitical tensions putting the non-proliferation regime under pressure, maintaining those barriers depends on international cooperation and arms control.
