The European Union has proposed a €90 billion support loan to help cover Ukraine’s budgetary and military needs in 2026–2027.
The loan would be financed through EU borrowing on capital markets and guaranteed by the EU budget. Repayment would only begin once Ukraine receives reparations from Russia for the damage caused by the war.
This initiative aims to ensure Ukraine’s financial stability while supporting its defense and recovery efforts.
With the EU–Mercosur agreement, a 700 million–people market is coming to life. Approved by EU member states on 9 January 2026, the deal strengthens trade, investment, and cooperation while promoting shared values, sustainability, and fair competition.
The European Union strongly condemns the violent crackdown on protesters in Iran. The European Commission stands ready to propose additional sanctions against IRGC members, building on the existing Weapons of Mass Destruction sanctions regime. The Commission holds IRGC members and entities responsible for human rights violations, the development of nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, and support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
This landmark trade deal will create growth, opportunities and greater prosperity for European citizens and businesses.
We are creating the largest free trade zone in the world – a market of 700 million people.
And Europe is starting a new era of cooperation with our partners in Latin America and beyond.
I will soon travel to Paraguay to sign the agreement.
