Turkish Cypriot Community on Trilateral Meeting – Media Stakeout | United Nations

Source: United Nations (video statements)

After holding a trilateral meeting with Secretary-General António Guterres, the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Leader of Turkish Cypriot Community, Ersin Tatar, expressed their commitment to further talks.

Tatar for his part said the Cypriot people “deserve progress that improves their daily lives.”

However, he said, “there is a troubling inconsistency between the words and deeds of the Greek Cypriot leadership. Since the appointment of the Special Envoy, we have seen arrests; the targeting of states that engage with us; the misuse of INTERPOL mechanisms, the rejection of assistance we offered during the forest fires, and obstructions regarding new crossings. Meanwhile, investment in armaments continues.”

The Turkish Cypriot leader said, “these actions certainly do not serve to build trust and stability or enhancing people-to people contacts.”

Nevertheless, he said, “I have today informed my commitment to maintaining a constructive and positive stance. I will continue to pursue initiatives that create a genuine atmosphere of cooperation.”

He will visit the guarantor powers, he will visit Brussels, in order to prepare the ground for the enlarged conference, which will take place – as our Secretary-General mentioned – before the end of the year, with the aim, I repeat, of resuming substantive talks from where they had been suspended.”

He said the Secretary-General’s had requested “to resume talks from where they broke off in Crans-Montana,” and added that he considers it “an obligation to do everything possible to succeed.”
