The European Union is taking new steps to protect children and teenagers online.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced during the State of the Union address the new EU KIDS ACT, proposing age-based protections for young people online. The plan includes no social media under the age of 13, no personal accounts under 15, supervised and limited accounts for 13 to 15-year-olds, and mandatory safe design for platforms for users aged 15 to 18.

The proposal would also place greater responsibility on online platforms to demonstrate that their services are safe for minors, as the EU seeks to address addictive design and strengthen protections for children in the digital environment.
