The European Union is taking new steps to support safe, legal migration and strengthen cooperation with partner countries.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced during the State of the Union address a new Mediterranean Youth Skills and Jobs initiative, aimed at boosting investment and creating opportunities through jobs, skills, training and apprenticeships in neighbouring countries.
The EU will also seek to reduce illegal migration, uphold the rights of people seeking protection and facilitate safe, legal migration through new Gateway Offices in partner countries, as part of a common European approach to migration and asylum. The wider approach builds on the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which now provides a common framework based on responsibility and solidarity.
